Understanding Epoxy Coverage Rates
When coating surfaces like concrete garage floors, wooden countertops, or bar tops, you need to calculate by surface area (coverage) rather than deep volume. Manufacturers rate floor and tabletop epoxies by how many square feet (or square meters) a single mixed gallon (or liter) will cover at a specific thickness.
The Standard Coverage Formula
Most standard floor and coating epoxies yield about 12 to 15 mils in thickness per coat. For tabletop epoxy, a general rule of thumb is that 1 mixed US gallon covers roughly 12 to 20 square feet for a thick self-leveling coat. To find your requirement, first calculate your area:
Total Area ÷ Brand's Coverage Rate = Epoxy Required
Because concrete and raw wood are highly porous, a significant amount of epoxy will soak into the material during the first pour. Always add a 10% overage to your calculations to account for waste, roller absorption, and surface variations.
Seal Coat vs. Flood Coat
For large floor spaces and raw materials, you cannot pour a single thick layer immediately. The surface will release trapped air, ruining your finish with millions of bubbles. You must separate your calculations into two stages:
- Seal Coat (Primer): A thin layer brushed, squeegeed, or rolled on to seal the pores of the concrete or wood. It spreads much further—often covering 40 to 50 sq ft per gallon.
- Flood Coat: The final, self-leveling thick layer poured over the cured seal coat. This provides the deep, glass-like finish and covers significantly less area (usually 12-20 sq ft per gallon).

How much epoxy do I need for a 2-car garage?
A standard two-car garage is approximately 400 square feet. Depending on the system you use (primer, base coat, flake system, and clear topcoat), you will generally need between 3 to 5 gallons of base epoxy, plus a specialized polyaspartic or urethane topcoat. Always calculate each layer separately based on the manufacturer's spec sheet.
Can I use deep pour resin for a floor?
No. Deep pour (casting) resins are formulated to cure very slowly in thick masses (2 to 4 inches). If you spread a deep pour resin thinly across a large floor, it will take weeks to cure properly, if it cures at all. You must use a dedicated floor epoxy or tabletop epoxy designed for thin, self-leveling coverage.
What happens if I stretch the epoxy too thin?
Trying to stretch a gallon of epoxy further than its recommended coverage rate will result in a defective finish. The resin will not have enough surface tension to self-level, leading to dimples, dry spots (fish eyes), and an uneven, wavy texture. It is always better to mix slightly too much than to run short.
